Charity of Choice
Bob talks about his “Charity Of Choice”. “Since leaving full time education, my whole adult life has been spent either behind a microphone or in a studio working with audio and it all began when I was 14 and I joined my local hospital radio station. Radio St. Nicks was based at St. Nicholas Hospital in Plumstead, south east London and I spent a couple of years there, learning the basics of how to communicate with an audience I could not see, skills which have helped me through the last 36 years!
The hospital has long been demolished and with it went the hospital radio station. Nowadays people from that area are likely to go to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, home of Meridian Radio which I look upon as being Radio St Nicks “in disguise”. Many people who have spent time in hospital will tell you that the days are sometimes long and, if you are confined to bed, boredom can very easily take hold. Meridian Radio is run by volunteers with the aim of providing something for the patients (and staff) to listen to. As the direct descendent of the station which gave me my start, I feel I owe them and want to give something back. The least I can do is provide my voice free of charge for the jingles and promotions on the station and I have made them my charity of choice. I am so pleased to see that some of the people running the station are the same people I worked alongside at R.S.N all those years ago!! If you have some time, maybe you would like to take a look at the station’s website at www.meridianradio.moonfruit.com, I shall be trying to find ways to raise money for them so if you have any ideas, let me know”.
